Bushfires


Bushfires are common in Australia. Australia is a dry country. Bushfires are natural disasters that can happen anywhere and anytime. They are life threatening and cause a lot of damage.

A bushfire is the combustion or burning of bush, forest. Bushfires are natural phenomena. They are really common in Australia. A bushfire can occur in the bush. They are most common in summer and Autumn. A fire is the heat and light that comes from burning substances.

Many bushfires happen in lots of places around the world. They happen where there is plenty of fuel, wood, leaves, forest or brush that can burn. Bushfires can be caused by a lightening strike, spontaneous or deliberate accidental flame. Also they can be caused by dry weather, high temperatures and flammables.

Bushfire smoke contains water, vapor, and gases. It includes carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Smokes from bushfires are made up from small particles, gases and water vapor. If you breathe the smoke into your lungs it can cause irritation to the lungs, throat and nose.

Bushfire smoke can affect air quality. If you breathe smoke it can ruin your health. It can also affect your family’s health and actions. It will ruin the insides of your body. Bushfires can burn down trees and kill plants and animals.





Fire can be very harmful. Fires can burn buildings, animals and people. Smoke from fire is poisonous. People can die if they breathe in smoke. If you do breath in smoke it can get in your lungs or even near your heart. About 7,000 people have died in fires. Fire is the flame, light or heat given when something is burning.


Fire can burn buildings and forests. It can also burn plastic and metal. Fire has burned the trees and plants that soak up the water. Fire can also burn skin. If you breathe in smoke you can die. You can also get very sick.

People must STOP if there clothes catch on fire, and drop to the ground and roll around. A fire will get bigger if people move or run. Running gives fire a lot of oxygen and therefore the flame gets bigger. Always be prepared when a fire happens.


Bushfires occur where there is plenty of material to burn. It also needs to be dry. It also occurs when there are piles of wood left on the ground. Also where cigarette buds are thrown and still lit. It can even happen by extreme heat.

If a bushfire comes, you should block all door ways and windows. Use a hose to spray down the sides of your house. Always turn off power and gas supplies. Fill up sinks and baths with water.


Bushfires are frequent in Australia with several hundreds of various sizes per year. Only some caused damage to property. In Australia there are twenty bushfires between 2000 and 2005, 2958 houses were destroyed and damaged and 830 homes were destroyed.
